Please Help! Engine stalls at random times

i have a 1993 Civic EX 1.6 automatic. it has 140,000 miles on it and i have had it for almost a year. when i bought it i did a complete tune up on it (plugs, wires, distributor cap / rotor, fuel filter, air filter) (i did replace my main relay when i first got the car too) and it has drove great for me until now.

the very first time i noticed a difference i was going up an overpass and i felt the engine seem to loose power for a half-second but it never stalled and just kept right on going.

i took it to a shop and they tested my battery and it wasn't holding much of a charge so i bought a new one

but now i will be driving and look down and realize the car just shut off with my yellow check engine light on. so i put it in neutral, coast to the side of the road. and try to restart it. sometimes it starts right back up, sometimes it doesn't want to start right away. but it usually starts back up after 10-15 minutes of trying.

it has been happening more frequently now. pretty much every other time i drive it this happens. its very frustrating because i have taken it to a shop twice and they haven't been able to reproduce the problem....

and this morning it happened and i actually heard the car kind of sputter when it stalled out. i really thought whatever the problem was that it finally gave out. the car did not want to start for almost 15 minutes after this but then it just started up and off i went again...

can you guys give me some advice if you have ever experienced this with your civic?

When you got the battery checked, did they indicate if the alternator was healthy? I wish these cars came with a voltage gauge. arrrg

Stalling abruptly while driving then refusing to restart for several minutes-- is usually the ICM (igniter unit). They can get so they work when cold but quit after warming up.
