Is it possible to rebuilt an engine while mounted in the car?

I was just wondering if that is possible for a diy project. Or lets say I get a shell and I wanted to transfer my engine to it. Could I take out peace by peace and reassemble it back in the other car?

yes but it makes it really hard and also what exactly are you planing on doing(rebuild)
i've swapped many of engines out with no cherry picker(engine hoist)
you can strip it down to the block while motor is still in car.

That is what I was thinking. take out the parts and put them back together in the other car. Or if I am just rebuilding for example then, take out the parts that need replacement/fix without removing the engine from the mounts in the car.

You can but you do not need to. The engine can actually be removed a different way, which only requires a dolly of some sort and a tall jack (and jack stands of course).

Here's a DIY on the subject:

Wow, these guys are good. This is very informative. One problem I would have though, is with the floor jack. The cart is easy enough to make and I have the jack stands but, my floor jack is a small one, not the regular full size that these guys use. In fact, my floor jack can barely lift the car high enough to put the jack stands under it. I bought cause it was cheaper but, I didn't know how small it was and the regular ones was, I think, over $200. So I am thinking in that case maybe a hoist would be better since that is one other thing that I don't have.

On a side note, I do envy those guys that have a garage to work with. Even with all the tools, it makes things much easier.
