Problems With My Civic (Revised from previous thread)
Hey guys,
This is a revised thread from Car Starts But Dies Right After. This thread is made to continue on with the diagnosis of my Civic and why shes having problems.
The low down: My car is working PERFECTLY, I bring it into the garage to balance wheels, fix some rust holes, inspect for bad parts etc.... I also took the spark plug wire and spark plug off one at a time so I would have the wires in the right place. When I start the car to leave the shop, she starts but then as the key goes back into its rest spot, she dies. That happened for a while then I changed the spark plug wires and filed corrosion off of the contact points in the distributor cap. After I changed the spark plug wires, she started and cut out, then I started her again and she stayed on and idled!
So thats great, she can idle for god only knows how long and when I went to press the gas (in any gear even in neutral) she starts to sputter and bog and jerk. So great, what now. I left her parked in the cold for maybe 2 days and when I went back to work on her again, she started, idled and when I pressed the gas, she didnt bog, sputter or jerk.....until she warmed up in the shop that is!! I had her in the warm shop for about an hour and I went to take her home (thinking it was the octane booster and fuel injector cleaner combo I put in her the day before that cleaned her) and not even out of the parking lot, she acted up again!! I was pissed! I left her alone till the next day. The next day I did some overhaulin' and this is where I am at that point, read the following:
What I did or replaced in the car:
--Replaced spark plug wires (Champion)
--Replaced spark plugs (NGK V-Power)
--Took the Dissy off and inspected the internal parts (broke rotor trying to take the rotor off)
--I listened for the fuel pump to run and it does everytime I turn the key
--Made sure all the sensors and plugs are all connected
--Took battery and cleaned the terminals
--Made sure the wires are in correct firing order
Alright, so today (Jan 28/07) all she does is turn over, wont start and there are tons of stuff I can think of causing this, I did this today:
--Unconnected the EFI Main Relay and inspected it, I have a pic of the internals (Is it bad with the melting of 3 posts)
--Installed a new Distributor Cap and Rotor
Other than that, I would like the Honda forum to help me try to solve this problem. There are abled ppl here and I am grateful to have the advise of so many. I have a 2 month old and his mom has Pancreaitis caused by Gall Stones, im in a rut because I am missing so much classes in college and the Civic is my only mode of transportation getting my son back and forth to his doctors appointments and his mom to the hospital getting checked up and possibly having surgery. Im all stressed and am trying my best to diagnose the problem.
These are the parts I have on the way to hopefully help fix the problem:
--Ignition Control Module
--Ignition Coil
--EFI Main Relay
Other than that, thanks to all who are helping and continue to support me in tryin to fix this problem. You guys are a big help!

Alright, I have some advice from my Auto Service Tech Teacher. He told me to take the spark plugs out and heat the tips with a torch, the engine could be flooded and the tips are probably to wet for ignition. He also told me to run the car with the fuel injectors un-plugged, that way all the fuel is burned. After all that, then plug the fiel injectors back in and then fire her up. I guess I can go by what he thinks, after all he got a 96% in his Journeymans exam for Automotive Service Technician!! Other than that, any more ideas?
I suppose, I am cranking and cranking the engine. There is power running to the injectors, when im cranking fuel is being added into the cylinders and the plugs might be saturated. Thats what im guessing.
STOP CRANKING IT!!! The fuel will start to leak down cylinder wall past the piston and you wont have any oil around the rings to create a seal. This will cause bad compression and a number of other problems. If this is what has happened take out your spark plugs and put a few drops of oil in the cylinder through the spark plug hole.
EDIT: And you could ruin the starter. lol

Hmmm, well, actually there is somewhat easier way to clean the flooding - crank it. But floor it while you crank it. It will understand what you need and it will shut the injectors off...
Lmao. I only crank the engine for less than 4 seconds at a time, and I did that for about a total of 7 times this morning. I just hope that all that cranking will not hurt the engine. I seen the seam in the solder, is that possibly causing some of my problems, or may it be causing ALL of them? I have an EFI Main Relay on the way and when that arrives, I will hope to god that the problem will be fixed. Thanks for the input guys, and thanks WRX for inspecting my Relay, you might have saved me alot of hassle!! Thanks, Ill keep things updated on my end, so check back now and then.
