So I noticed today that my radiator fluid was low. I filled it up. Drove around for a while and checked the level again. Radiator was low as hell. Radiator overflow was full. What would be causing all the fluid to come from the radiator to the overflow?

 

Bad head gasket will fill the cooling system with gases / air and push the coolant out. To check that fill the radiator then start the engine (cold) with the cap off and rev it, see if any gas blows out.

Or it could just be a faulty radiator cap, or an air leak in the hose between the radiator and the reservoir. Normally as the engine warms up some coolant leaves the radiator due to expansion. It is supposed to return when it cools down.

 

Just what I didn't want to hear. lol. It was pushing air. I saw the bubbles in the overflow while the car was running. I thought I saw fluid in the oil last night. But figured I was seeing things due to the dim lighting. Ughhh.

 

are you sure you dont have a leak anywhere on any of the coolant hoses?

 

Not that I can see, no. Its starting to rain so I cant do much right now. I did check the oil, and its 100% oil, thank god. I tried MK's test but didn't see any bubbles. The car was running for about 5 minutes before I tried it though. So I am going to wait for the car to cool down and try it again later.

What gets me is the car does not run hot. I can drive it as long as i want and not get above regular running temp

 

It stopped raining for a little bit. So I went out and played with it for a little bit.

Did MK's test again, and had no air bubbles.
With the car off, I took the cap off the overflow and blew into the tube. Noticed a small amount of air leaving at the top of the radiator. Next to the cap where the overflow line is. Other than that, I noticed no leaks.

But I did notice the radiator was very low on fluid again. I wish it was dry so I could see where all this fluid is going.

 

Sounds like you have a hole in the radiator, or a bad cap. The system should be airtight everywhere except the top cap of the reservoir.

 

fill it up, run car for 10 mins or so until its at normal operating temp, then shut it off and look around for any hissing, or any signs of a leak, dont forget to inspect those tiny hoses around the intake manifold, and also check the water pump.

 

mitch, i did what you said. No leaks/sounds. It kept fluid in the radiator this time.
Let run and parked on the driveway instead of in the grass like I usually do. Saw no leaks on the ground.
