replacement keys
I have a simple question(I think) I need to get a spare set of keys made for my 98 honda civic lx. Is this a special key that needs programming that would require that I go to the dealer? or should a hardware store/locksmith be able to make that key?
nope the 6th gen used normal keys with no special chips. any locksmith should have them or a cheaper option is to go to Lowes or some other home improvement store.
When I got mine made every hardware store I went to wouldn't make me a key because they said that sometimes when they try to make Honda keys they get stuck in the ignition
Honda made me one for $5 |
no chips in your keys, any locksmith would be able to make you one.
thats interesting hamorhead, never ran into that problem |
^yea but my crx only has a hardware store key and the one I had Honda make for it won't work go figure
I had mine made at home depot....no problems
Thanks! I went to Home Depot and got two keys made. Both work great.
Nope, not special. Dealer will make you one though for like $2, electronically by using your VIN number. Then it'll be a perfect cut every time. You just bring your registration inside with you and go to the parts counter.
just take your registration slip to any honda dealership and have a brand new key cut.
its perfectly cut! problem with typical key places is they use your old worn key to make a copy of a old worn key.LOL been there done that try to stay away from them myself. my old 94 civic key stuck alot and didnt want to work the locks properly. had a new key vin cut and the new one worked perfect! only thing that kinda sucks is my 96civics vin does not show in the vin database no idea why but my vin number on this car is a HUGE PITA when i do anything with it! |
