Default Reverse lights gone wild!!

So whenever I put my car in reverse the lights come on but they stay on after I put it in 1st..and they won't turn off unless I turn the car off. What could cause that and how will I be able to fix it?

If it's manual, the switch is on the transmission-- it's the only electrical part on the transmission. Unplug switch and if the lights go out, replace the switch.
