RPMS go crazy &STALLS

Hi im Jen.
I have a 93 Honda Civic Del Sol si 5speed with 163,000 miles.
I will start my car and start driving for like 8 minutes and my rpms will literally go crazy.
They will jump from 2000 all the way past red line and everywhere in between....
(but my engine is not reving its only the rpm needle going crazy psycho.)
Then usually after this my car just stalls completely even in middle of driving.
I have learned to rig it by either shifting into any other gear than my current one and it will start up again on its own and just keep going or i have to turn off the key then turn it on and it starts.
well please help im completly lost and so is my dad we really could use some help

Is the Check Engine Light ON?

The signal for the tachometer comes from the igniter unit inside the distributor. Both the tachometer and stalling problem are probably being caused by a faulty igniter unit.

deffinatly give the ignitor box a check. a jumping tach is a near definite sign of a failing ignitor.
