Default Running rich

The exhaust from my car smells like its burning pretty rich. I know how to fix this on a carburated car, not quite sure how to do it with fuel injectors. How would I go about doing this?

Any CEL codes? Check the fuel pressure. Make sure the vacuum hose on the back of the fuel pressure regulator is hooked up. Take out the spark plugs and examine them. If one is fouled and black but the others are OK there may be a problem with the injector for that cylinder (dirty or stuck open).

No CEL, the exhaust just smells pretty strongly.

It's designed to run rich until warmed up. Does your engine warm up fully? You should be running a 195 degree thermostat. If the gas mileage is still OK, I wouldn't worry about it.

I haven't noticed any change in gas mileage, but I just realized how much more strongly it smelled today when it was running while I checked the transaxle fluid. I think it has only recently started to smell like this. I'll disconnect the negative, for a while, to reset the computer though, just to make sure it really isn't throwing any codes.

Old plugs, wires, cap, and rotor?

Ignition timing set to spec?

Bad O2 or ECT sensor?

I really don't know. I just recently bought the car, so for all I know they were there when the car was bought new in 1993. If there was any of those problems, would it throw a code?

None would necessarily throw a code if bad, even though the O2 and ECT sensors could.

The OBD1 system does not have programming to detect misfiring like OBDII does. But it is usually obvious when driving.

Its occasionally rough starting up at first, but I have yet to hear it backfire. I'll check the spark plugs and the wires tomorrow. How would I test to see if the distributor cap, rotor, ignition timing chain, O2, and ECT have gone bad?
