Short grinding sound after ignition

When I start the engine, I hear a grinding sound for about half a second just after/during ignition.

It sounds like gears in the transmission grinding but I've got the clutch all the way in and the car is in neutral.

It doesn't make this sound while I'm driving or when I turn off the car. Only when I start it.

after the car starts are you still turning the key?

cause if your car starts and you turn the key it it will grind your starter against the flywheel...that might be the sound you are hearing.

Clean or replace your starter. When you have the starter off turn the engine and check your flywheel for damage/warp.
