So when it shuts off, you have to jump start it, it won't crank at all unless you do? Does it have other symptoms of low voltage, such as dim lights or radio not working?
Really sounds like bad connections at the battery, or the ground wires. How was your alternator tested? Since it's an intermittent problem, you have to wait for it to occur. Next time it is idling low, measure the voltage at the battery posts (not the terminals, the actual lead posts that are part of the battery).

He could try just putting the jumper cables on without even connecting the other end to another car. That might be enough to tighten the connection again. (It's a miracle! I can draw electricity out of thin air!)
