I was driving on my way to work this morning on the highway. I decided that I wanted to let the engine out a little, and got it up to about 6000 RPM's in 4th. Just before I was about to shift it into 5th, it felt like something gave, and then the "check engine" light came on. When it happened, it also felt like the RPM's suddenly dropped and the speed dropped too.... I took my foot off the gas, let it coast for a bit, and then put it into 5th and made it to work without any problems. I popped the hood and to check if maybe I threw a belt, but they were still on. The car still sounds fine, and I don't think it's the VTEC because I gunned it down a side street just to see if it felt or sounded any different which it didn't (but then again maybe it's me and I'm trying to convince myself it doesn't.....)

I plan in taking to my mechanic to get it scanned, but I was hoping someone might have heard of something like this and would have a suggestion as to what I did to my car (1996 Civic Si/Ex D16Y8).

could be low oil.....you didnt happen to see a hole in the side of your block and a rod sitting on the ground did you?

 

No I didn't, but I am due for an oil change. Actually a few hundred km's over.... But I did't see any holes or rods... but maybe I'll check again. I can say for sure that I did't see any oil puddles or even small leaks under the car.
