Default speedo not working

Yesterday while driving home my speedo just stopped working, check engine light came on a few seconds later. Made it home and car seemed to be running fine, however today took the car out and it just died and would not restart without a jump, got it back home and it died again. I know about the speed sensor and where its located but would this also make the car just die??? I don't have any way of checking the check engine code. Can anybody give me some clues. Thx

year/make/model??

Also, we really don't care if you don't have a way of checking the code. Just do it. You NEED that code to figure out what's up.

Check whether fuse 15 is blown. If so, read this service bulletin:

http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/tsb/civic/x99-029e.pdf

You can pull the CEL codes as shown at the link in my signature.

Yes it sounds like you have the common problem of the wire behind the engine fraying and shorted out. That will cut the power to your speed sensor, oxygen sensors, and alternator, thus the dead battery.

Ok, first of all thanks for the response, I was able to borrow a snap on scanner from a guy at work. The codes that show up are P1298 undocumented code, P0135 02 heater ckt bank #1 snsr #1, P0141 02 heater ckt bank #2 snsr #2. I will jack the car up and look for the wire issue and check back later. Thanks again

Yea, you need to get the code scanned. Most auto parts stores do this for free. The reason they do it for free is so that you'll get it scanned there and buy whatever part there that they tell you the code says you need to replace.

After reading the post and checking the link from RonJ's post, I removed the intake manifold bracket and could not see any wire(s) that looked stripped/rubbed, however I looked on the back of the bracket and you could clearly see where the wire(s) had arched on the bracket. After inspecting the wires again it looks like 1 wire has a very tiny rub spot on it, will re-tape and replace fuse and see what happens. Thanks again to everyone, RonJ your the man. Will post later with the outcome. Time for a brew!!

Well after retaping the wires and putting some plastic wire covering on the wire harness, I put the bracket back on and replaced the fuse. Fired up the car and cleared the codes, cel went off and scanner detected no problems. Huge thanks to everyone for your help, saved me alot of cash that I don't have right now.
