Speedometer help - DX 1993

Hey guys. Well I'm new here and I have a problem! My speedometer isn't working correctly. Sometimes it works fine, and other times it doesn't work at all( It shows that I'm going 0 mph when I'm actually going faster ). Sometimes the needle also jumps up and down, like from 0-60 even though I'm going like 35 or something. So what shoud I do? I asked around and a lot of people told me it was my speedo cable. So I bought the only one I could get my hands on( It's kinda a crappy generic one but should work ).

If the speedo cable is the problem then how do I install it?

And if the speedo cable isn't the problem, what is?

I drive a Honda Civic DX 1993

You don't have a speedometer cable. It's an electrical system that gets a signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) located atop the transmission.

Do the odometer and tripmeter also not work? Is the CEL ON?

Everything works except for the speedometer. What is a CEL?

CEL = check engine light

Given that the tripmeter and odometer work, the speedometer itself in the gauge assembly is likely bad.

The fact that the OP's odometer and tripmeter work proves that the VSS is fine.

Your statement suggests that the trip and odo also did NOT work some of the time, which together with your speedo problem, is consistent with a faulty VSS.

This differs from the OP, whose response I interpret to mean that the trip and odo always work. If correct, then the VSS must be fine as the speedo, trip, and odo equally depend on a properly functioning VSS.
