So how do I replace the VSS? Where is it located specifically and how does it look like?

On the passenger side of engine bay closer to the firewall, the VSS is sitting on top of the transmission:

It would be wise to at least inspect the VSS wires and connector for damage before spending money to replace the VSS.

Well okay I thought I found the VSS. But I wasn't sure. So I unplugged it and drove around. Usually my speedometer works half the time, but when I unplugged what I thought was the VSS it didn't work at all. So that confirmed that I found it. So i plugged it back in and my speedometer worked 100%. So I guess I don't really need a new VSS. Maybe the plug was just dirty? IDK but thanks anyways everyone

hi,
hope it's ok to jump on the end of this thread.

I have a 93 civic cx with 5 speed mt and 118k miles. Irecently have the same problem as the op, but the dash lights are also involved. SOmetimes, if I hit the dash all will start working again, but not always... Two separate problems? or are they connected?

thanks,
Steve

Dash lights - The dimmer switch is probably faulty. Verify by jumping the red wire to the black wire in the connector to see if the lights work all of the time now.

Speedo - Is the CEL ON? Do the odo and trip also not work? Have you checked for loose connectors at the rear of the cluster?

Ron,
thanks, the CEL (the light that has the engine on it?) goes on for a few seconds when i turn the key to on, or start the car. The odometer, tripometer and speedometer are all intermittent. Based on a previous comment, I unplugged and replugged the VSS in and out, and, the speedometer seemed to work for a sec and then didnt work at all. Do I need a new VSS?

In reference to the dash lights, I think you are correct about the light dimmer button. If I push on it, or move it around, the lights go on. Do you think the dimmer switch itself is bad? How do I connect the black and red wires together?

thanks so much for your help - I would have never thought of the dimmer switch!

Steve
