Speedometer periodically reads 0
Hey folks, wondered if I could run a problem by you on the civic I just recently picked up. Everything seems to be going fine with it, but intermitantly the speedometer will drop to zero as I'm driving, then pick back up again at the correct speed. The odometer stops during this period as well. Seems to happen more often when its cold out. I pounded on the top of the speedo before and it came back on, but that may have been a coincidence, because other times I've pounded its not reacted.
Anyway, I've done reading about the VSS problems, but my issue sounds a bit different. The VSS stuff I've read people are complaining about the speedo reading some odd speed constantly (like 40 MPH when they're going 20 or 80) or the needle dancing around. Mine doesn't have either of those symptoms. Its either on and working correctly or off.
What do you guys think? Thanks in advance-
K

sounds like your gauge cluster is going bad... happened to my BMW about 2 years ago. It would do what you are saying now, then after about a month or two it stopped working all together. I had to buy a whole new gauge cluster. Got lucky and found a used one froma junkyard for about $40, would have run me $550 new.
