Starting problem in winter

I had to leave my 2000 honda civic ex at work today because it would not start. Luckily a coworker volunteered to give me a ride home Thank god because i did not feel like waiting for my fiance to pick me up when its about -20 degrees out.
oK heres the thing when its summer time my car would start up fine and all but when winter comes and it gets to around -10 to -20 degrees my engine would struggle to start. Usually in that tempature the engine would crank for about 3-4 secs and then puff! the engine fires up and then i breath a sigh of relief knowing that i wont be stuck out below zero. Today i wasn't so lucky my car did not start at all. it was cranking fine and i know the batteries fine cuz i bought it new not to long ago. if someone could plz tell me why this is happening and what i can do to prevent this from happening again i would really appreciate it very much. it would save me from walking home in a -20 degree weather. thank you
