Sudden bad oil leak! Help!
 

So my friend has a 2005 civic LX with the 1.7 and about 5 months ago I convinced him of the benefits of full synthetic oils after I changed all the cars in my family to it (ram 1500, toyota sequoia, chrysler pacifica) and none of them leaked....even the truck that had 150k when i switched it over. Three days ago his car sprung a bad leak that when he parked in my garage while visiting for a few hours dripped about 8 2inch size pools of oil. Any ideas what could be going on? The only thing that he has done recently that was "bad" was going in reverse at 40 mph from a dead stop and he accelerated quite hard.

Of course you need to find exactly where it is coming from. If the oil has just been changed, it could simply be the drain plug. This is about the only place that will leak constantly while the car is parked.

The cam plug is also a common oil leak problem. It is a plastic plug that closes a hole in the head on the transmission end of the camshaft. Oil from there will run all the way down the transmission before dripping off the bottom, which might make you think it is the rear crank seal leaking.

Its not coming from the plug, plz elaborate on the cam plug as oil was changed 5 months ago

was the oil filter tightened properly ??? the cam seal

We figured it out! oil filter failed and was leaking bad.....odd considering it was a K&N

i doubt it failed im guessing human error like i said you probably under tightened or over tightened the filter. you only hand tighten these filters as hard as you can with your hand no tools. did you bother to clean the surrounding area or lube the gaskit ???

No it wasn't anything we did this time, filter just failed about 1cm above the seal on the side of the filter. I worked at jiffy lube over the summer so I'm fairly sure I know how to put a filter on lol

if you have jiffy lube training then that just substantiates my suspi cion lol. pics or it didn't happen.
