Tension Pulley '97 Civic
Can someone tell me how to loosen or move the tension pulley so I can put the belt back on? I cannot find that section in the service manual I downloaded(which it's hard to find ANYTHING in that manual) and I researched it a little on here. One old post said to just turn the bolt on top of the pulley. I've tried that and all that seems to happen is the bolt comes out or tightens. I still can't move the pulley or get the belt on. I'm sure this has to be simple, but I've never messed with a tension pulley like this.
Which tensioner?
Timing belt: Do what 94 said. After you push the tensioner all the way back against the spring, tighten the bolt again so it stays out of the way while you put the belt on.
Air conditioner belt: Loosen the nut on the outside of the idler pulley (the small one, not the one on the compressor itself) about 1 turn. Do not make it too loose. Note that there is a long screw on the engine side behind the bracket that goes down through the side of the shaft for the pulley. Using a 10 mm 1/4 inch drive socket with at least a 6 inch extension, reach down from the top of the engine and turn the head of this bolt counterclockwise, at least several turns. If the pulley doesn't go down by itself, press it downward. Put the belt over the pulleys and turn the same bolt clockwise to tighten it. When the belt is tight, tighten the nut on the outside of the pulley.

Thanks MK(& 94). It was the air conditioning belt. That's a different pulley than the GMs & Fords I've dealt with. Never had to move the power steering pump to get to a pulley before either. My 91 Civic didn't have AC or power steering. Thanks again.
