Default Tick tick tick tick ugh...

My 07 Civic LX with a 5-speed has a tick noise when I am traveling at anything above above 2000rpms. Tick is fully noticeable when engine is fully warmed up. Any ideas of what it could be?!

Have your valve clearance adjusted.

No. I haven't heard of that. What is that?

Civic engines don't have self-adjusting valve lifters. Each rocker arm has an adjustment to take the slack out of the mechanism and compensate for wear. As the engine wears normally, the valves will get noisy and need to be readjusted. It's a simple procedure. The owner's manuals used to explain how to do it yourself but I don't think they do any more.

It's almost like the tic fades in and out.

If the car has more than 30,000 miles on it I would start by adjusting the valves anyway. It's due.

Do you hear it when you rev up the engine in neutral, or only when the car is moving?

That is that my boyfriend thought it was but, the Service Manager at the local Honda Dealership said that they don't have to do this on the newer Civics. Both. It is less noticeable while accelerating but once ur at a certain speed cruising along it is more noticeable.
