Transmission grinds when going into reverse -93 civic

Why does my transmission grind when going into reverse. It doesn't happen all the time, but it's really annoying when it does. How bad is this? Am I going to break my transmission?

you need to come to a complete stop before shifting into rev,
a tip you can shift into first then into rev to make it easier(without car moving).
