Default Transmission Problem?

Hey everyone, I am new to this forum and I am having a problem with my '93 automatic 1.5L dx hatchback. I started driving it the other day and it all of a sudden lost drive around 20 mph. The car was in drive but it was acting like it was in neutral. Just before it did this it started making a whiring sound. I pulled off and turned the engine off. When i turned it back on a few minutes later and put it back into drive it stayed in drive until i could get it home.

Earlier tonight I drove it about 20 feet before it lost drive. Every time it does it i have to turn the engine off and wait about 5 minutes and then it will drive another 20 feet before it acts like its in neutral again. It took me an hour to go 3 miles like this, every time it lost drive around 20 mph.

Has anyone else had this happen and what could it possibly be? I am guessing that its the transmission since it seems to be unable to stay in a gear past 20 mph. I am not super car savvy, but i know somethings and some help diagnosing the problem would be helpful! I really dont want to have to tow it to Honda and pay a $150 diagnostic fee if I can help it. Thanks!!!

to me it sounds like a transmission slip which is a serious sign of transmission failure but i can't be sure.

hope this helps.

also I don't know about transmission shops where you live but where i live theres a shop that will diagnose for free.
