Default Two issues: Idle and transmission

I know, I know... one topic per thread. Sue me.

Every time I back out of my parking spot, turn to leave, and shift into drive to go somewhere, there's a loud *CLACK* when the transmission engages. It happens 90% of the time. Any ideas what's up? 2000 LX auto.

Also, my idle has started to get really really low when I'm in gear stopped at intersections, etc. It's worse when the AC is running of course. Sometimes it drops down to 300 or 400ish. Feels like the car is about to die but it never actually does die. I know there's the usual IACV clean to fix that, but does the y7 have one that'll solve the same issue?

Clunk going from forward to reverse could be a bad motor mount. Hold the brakes on with the hood open and shift forward to reverse and watch how much the engine jumps around.

The auto D16Y7 has an IACV but it is mounted on the bottom of the throttle body and has 3 wires. The concept is the same, it can get dirty and stuck, so remove it and clean it out.

keep us posted if cleaning the iacv solves the idle problem. the same thing happens to me, I already tried cleaning the iacv but maybe I didnt do a good enough job. I have been messing with the idle screw a couple times a month to keep the problem at bay.

Ok, on a real computer now.

Happened 3 times today. I backed out of a parking spot, shifted from reverse to drive, felt the transmission engage, heard the rpms drop slightly as it engaged. This is all normal. What isn't normal is the sound afterwards. It's a cross between a metallic "clack" and a dull "clunk". You hear it AND feel it. But all of my mounts are intact. They're a little worn but they're all there. I'd almost tie my camera to a hose or something and dangle it around in there while doing the shift just to get the sound.

Hmm... so it grabs the gear and THEN clunks... is there a pause between gear-grab and clunk (gear - pause - clunk) or immediately after (gearCLUNK)?

if you put it in neutral, and shift to reverse and back to neutral does it clunk?

How about neutral to drive and back to neutral (while holding brakes)?

one last one to try... neutral to drive (foot off the brake)?

or is it ONLY reverse to drive?

I'm almost thinking either something CV shaft related (inner joint maybe?) or suspension maybe?

It would be good to be outside the car and have someone else shift it while you listen to try and locate the source of the noise.

^This is probably true.

@SilverSedan, yes, it grabs, short pause, clunk. It does not clunk from neutral to reverse and back. When my foot is off the brake, it does not clunk from neutral to drive. The only time I've been able to make it happen was when I back out of a parking spot and shift into drive.

Sometimes I put it in neutral to roll back and then shift to drive. Same effect.

Hobo, so the only time it clunks is going into drive with your foot on the brake?

If that's the case I would think its either brake or suspension related... because of the torque loading up while your foot is on the brake. MK, any ideas?
