Very hard to turn steering wheel, nonpower steering.

Ok so my problem with the steering began after I lowered the rear crossmember. When I did this I took out a nut that had a spring and what looked like some kind of piston in it. I realized that this didn't help lower it so I put it back in. Now it is harder to turn the steering wheel than anything in my life! I thought it might just be because the b18 is heavy in an ef. But i lifted it off the ground and its still just as difficult. Thanks help is always appreciated!

Where was this nut? As it is still hard to turn with the wheesl off the ground the rack is probably messed up.

You could disconnect the tie rods from both wheels; with the wheels off the ground the wheels should swing freely, also the steering wheel and rack turn easily. If you just pop the end joints out of the knuckles you can put it back together without messing up the alignment.

if you follow the steering column down and through the rear lower cross member its at the bottom. with no wheels and tires its still hard.
