i read a post on here saying the a sohc with the plugs to the front of the valvecover is a vtec. is this true? my car has a sohc plugs to front but it doesn't say vtec anywhere can somone clarify

If you cant tell by looks then can you tell by feel?

Starting at around 5500 rpm the cam profile will change over and you will get a jump in power. The exhaust note will change also. If you hear/feel that then you have vtec.

Also, isn't there something to do with the throttle body? I thought that if it is mounted horizontaly onto the intake mani then its V-TEC, and if its mounted virticaly then its not? Not sure if this is correct though.

I have a V-tec and the throttle body is horizontal, the plugs are in the front, it doesn't say V-tec on the valve cover, and I CAN'T feel it when it "kicks" in.

It's is very subtle on our SOHC engines. It is felt a lot more on DOHC's.

just because the plugs are in the front does not mean it's got a VTEC. A DX civic doesn't have a vtec and the plugs are still in the front. Look at your engine code on the block. Also...what model civic do you have...? DX does not have a VTEC, EX does, and I believe the LX does...if not then the HX does
