Whistling sound NOT CAUSED BY INTAKE, there are no Aftermarket parts on this car!!!!
While test driving a 99 civic EX yesterday, i noticed a whistling sound in between 3800, and 4300 rpms on the tach. The sound seemed to be coming from the engine, it started soft at 3800, peaked around 4100, then faded out around 4300. Any idea what may be causing this?? I am seriously considering buying this car within the next couple days, but if this is a long term issue causeing problem, i need to know now!! Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

There might be a squeak in one of the pulleys... something like that is normally caused by sand or dirt or mud.

WOuldnt that cause the noise to happen all the time though? It seems like if it were just "dirty" it would happen more often, or even at diffferent times than just the one space in the tach.

I figured it was most likely the intake, but what is actually CAUSING it to do that?? Loose bolt? crack? bump
