Worth changing engine in 93 Hatchback?
 

I have a 1993 Civic DX hatchback with 176,000 km, all stock with the original engine. The engine had been burning significant oil (1 litre per 200 -250 km) for the last few years, and recently has been running on only 3 cylinders (no compression in one). I would guess the best case is the rings need replacement, but do not really want to put much money into the old, engine (I had never replaced the water pump or timing belt, although I had to have the head gasket replaced last year). Should I even consider fixing the old engine?

I purchased the car new, and still quite like it, and was considering getting the engine replaced. Would it make sense to swap in a larger engine? What engine should I use, and what would the approximate cost be?

The car is used 2 - 3 times a week for a short commute, and every couple of months is used for a longer trip (1500 km). I am NOT interested in racing, either on the street (which is BAD!) or a racetrack, but would not mind more power than I originally had.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

drop in a z6...sohc vtec motor..you will like it..and they come in the ex and si of your year so its a bolt in afair...no problems...

I second that, a Z6 would be a good choice. Pretty much a direct bolt in.

you can also get a jdm d15b vtec motor for around 450.00 to 800.00 thats what i did the motor has a lot of pull compaired to the oem motor and it will be a simple bolt in except for wireing the vtec if you have any questions feel free to ask me :D

ya i wouldnt rebuild the DX motor but get a ex/si motor D16Z6. only two things you need to do the swap there is the engines wiring harness and the computer for the Z6 i think its the p28 i think...

very simple swap and doesnt cost to much.

BUT just remember the more power ya get from the motor the less MPG your gonna get, so if you want to keep the great gas sipper than replace the motor with the same dx motor... the Z6 will drop the milage alittle. and if ya do a more complicated swap with a DOHC motor you will definatly loose more MPG.

^ also, the twin-cam motors are more expensive than the single-cam ones.

But a z6 would be a great motor for you... you'll still get 30+ mpg, but you'll have a little more power. Also, you can find them for $500 or so with the transmission and everything.
