new to the site, drive a 98 civic ex coupe, haven't done much to it yet but want to switch out my old tranny, any suggestions? want to go from an auto to a manual

Welcome, get your tools out or open you check book if you want to do an auto to manual swap.

I was about to ask the exact same thing...Ngoti8tor is back?!?!

But yeah, as the proud owner of a car almost exactly like yours (just 1 year newer, but a 5sp) I would say if you are going to swap in a new tranny also swap the engine. The d16y8 isnt a bad engine, but you will notice a HUGE power gain if you dropped in a b series engine, like say a b16a2 or b18c1.
