Getting started

Hi!

I've never really worked with cars, but I'm becoming more interested in the idea. I have a 2000 Civic LX automatic (ugh), and since Civics are so moddable I thought it might be cool to add some aftermarket components to it. My exhaust manifold has a (harmless) crack in it, so I'm thinking of replacing that, perhaps with a 4-2-1 header. I'm also considering a cold air intake. I've found many, many brand new racing headers and intakes on EBay for about $20, some claiming to be from brands like DC-Sports. The prices seem unrealistically low, and I'm sort of skeptical. Has anyone tried these very cheap components?

Is the exhaust/intake a good place to start? I have up to a few hundred dollars to blow right now. I'm not looking for much of a performance increase; I just want to do something cool with my car and learn how to work under the hood. In fact, I'd prefer modifications that improve or at least don't hurt gas mileage. Obviously I'm looking for pretty simple projects, although I have a few friends with lots of experience that could guide me.

yea header, intake and exhaust is a very good place to start. dc sports makes very good headers and aem makes good cold air intakes. those are just my opinions on the best. as for the exhaust, greddy is good. just watch ebay and check the feedback of the seller b4 u buy! oh, welcome to the forum!

if its not used, and its priced too low, chances are its a knock-off, or a shady seller. post up links before you buy, and we'll try to help out.
