need civic advice

new old man here..looking at 2 civics to drive 300 miles per day. one is an 89 hatchback, four speed, 1.6 i think it said. 126k.. seems to run fine, motor sounds good..little rough around the edges to look at..,,a/c is down, but compressor kicks in.$1000.00 or less the other is a 91 civic 4 door, 5 speed..extra nice, 5 speed, cold air sunroof, 99k on it. 1500.00 or less to buy this one.. what gas milage will i get form these?? 80% of my driving is interstate at 70 mph. my son has a 91 civic hb in the driveway he was going to fix..even bought a 30k motor from overseas that runs perfect...but it needs basically evrything under the front end suspension wise, shocks on the back, rough interior..so i do have a parts supply here..i'm an old honda motorcycle mechanic and my oldest son is a certified diesel mechanic..so all bases are covered here techwise...just looking for feedback on the milage and any other tips you guys might have..thanks..pj

Welcome to the forum!! My personal opinion is the 4 door becuase I'm not a big fan of the hatchback, but either car has plenty of life left in it. From your description the 4 door sounds to be in better condition overall. Prolly get better gas milage with the 5 speed though I can't say for certain.

i've been researching a gas milage chart that i use all the time and has proven reliable..the milage for a 90 civic 1.5 with a 4 speed is 37 hiway..with a 1.5 5 speed..34 highway...don't understand that...all tghings considered, the 4 door with 99k on it sounds like the best deal i've found. i've been in the automotive business in parts or sales at different dealers for the last 10 years...and 1600.00 doesn't buy much at all now...certainly with low miles like this one..thanks..pj

i see there are two different motors for the civics i'm looking at..1.5 and 1.6 ...which is considered the better motor..or is there a difference...any problems to look for in either motor...which would be more economical to operate..thanks..pj
