It's gonna depend on what generation of Civic you want to look at. 92-95 are getting pretty old. Their weakness was relays (main relay, condenser and compressor relays). 96-00 didn't have that problem, but any older Civic with higher mileage will have worn parts. You want to check out the trailing arm bushings, gaskets, seals, etc. 01-05 Civics don't have great transmissions and aren't good for modifying.
The main trims go like so: DX, LX, EX, Si. There are also VX, GX, and HX trims.
DX is the base model. DX/LX are non-vtec. LX is the base plus a few power options. EX is the one with all power options and a vtec engine. Si is the highest trim level with the best engine. 99-00 Si's have a dual cam vtec.
The GX runs on compressed natural gas, the HX has a vtec-e engine and CVT transmission for better fuel economy, and the VX is also a fuel economy trim if I remember. The 92-95 Civic VX had an engine with roller rockers, if I remember correctly, which meant less power but better economy.
