Default new member..Diesel CRX

I just bought my first honda car today. it's an 83 crx i'm pretty sure. Tomorrow i plan to remove the powertrain, and eventually replace it wth the engine/trans from my vw golf diesel.

the golf weighs 1,000 pounds more than the crx. both cars in stock form could get around 50 mpg. Combining the fuel efficiency of a vw diesel, and the light weight crx body i hope to achieve a vehicle that gets extremely good gas mileage.

vw diesel engine/trans is about 300 pounds. Not sure how heavy the stock honda powertrain is.

i'll post photos along the way.

this is a super low budget project. the vw was $400 many thousands of miles ago, i just bought the crx today for $300. I figure the vw body is worth at least 300 bucks at the scrap yard!

could be interesting getting a VW drivetrain to be happy in its new Honda home...but it does sound like an interesting project, and a very unique one at that!! Keep us posted with updates and pics!

things are moving a bit slower than i'd like....don't the always! I was able to remove the vw motor yesterday. Today i'd like to remove the honda motor, then set the vw motor inside the honda just to see how it looks. I just talked to metal machine shop guy who is pretty excited about the project. He's more than happy to help me marry the vw to the honda.

photos to come!

just got the 2nd motor pulled a few minutes ago....they are remarkably similiar in size and weight. wish i had a scale handy.

next step is to set the diesel in the honda and see how it looks....then fab some motor mounts.

i don't know why i can't seem to post photos...i use several other forums and don't have any trouble...

anyhow, got the vw diesel set in place inside the crx. Nothing is bolted down, it's just mocked up so that i can see that it does in fact fit.

motor mounts are the next stage of the project.

thats pretty nice, those diesel engines last forever. and its begging to be turbo'd haha. now stick a hydrogen booster on there and you will be getting over 100 mpg

i never did re-post my progress with the car.

I worked really hard in the beginning. Got the vw motor/trans installed in the honda. all she needs is shifter linkage help, and exhaust...then paint and body.

just ran out of ambition to work on it for the past several months, but i'd like to get her finished before spring.
