Hello everyone, I just joined the forum today July 13, 2007.
My wife and I have owned the following Honda Civics;
We bought a new first gen civic, with a 4 speed manual trans, that came out in 1973. It was our first new car and it was just a few months after we got married. Later I gave it to my youngest brother, after we bought a new 1975 civic. He then gave it to my youngest sister, after he bought a new Toyota. The drivers side front axel gave out and it sat at my Mother and Father's house for about a year. Then after coming home to visit, my sister said to take it back if I wanted to. So I did and replaced the trans axel and repainted it in 1979 and then traded it in on a new 1981, 5 speed manual trans, right after that.
The new 1975 Civic, with manual trans,was purchased due to the interest in the new engine design, that we studied about in one of my Mechanical Engineering courses. At the time, Honda was able to meet the California emission requirements for California with that new cylinder head design having a built-in upper small combustion chamber with a separate valve and spark plug, for each of the 4 cylinders. I really enjoyed that car and so did my wife, so much so that we bought a new 1976 civic, with manual trans, of the same color as the '75; both were orange. I personally wanted the bright yellow, but it was going to be her car and she didn't like the yellow color and loved the orange. So we had 2 Civics that were like twins in the drive way.
In hindsight, of all the Civics we owned, I wish, I had the 75 model today. The difference in the '75 vs '76 was that Honda made a change, to meet emissions spec's. They modified the idle return so during the pause between shifting, it would not return immediately to idle, like the '75 did. It would hold a little higher rpm between shifts. This was a little annoying to me, but my wife never noticed the difference.
Our next Civic was the new 1981 Silver 2 door with a 5 speed manual trans, as mentioned above.
We went away from the Honda Civics, when we bought a new 1984 Nissan Sentra with a 5 speed manual trans and a new 1987 Ford Taurus with an automatic trans. Neither of these 2 cars were of the quality, fit and finish of the civics. So we went back to a 1991 white, Civic 4 door, with a 5 speed manual trans. We kept this until 2000 when we bought a new Hyundai Sonata with a 5 speed manual trans and gave the 1991 Civic to our Youngest daughter instead of trading it in. It served her well for many years, until a young male driver crossed the yellow line and hit her head on. He was 17 and coming back from soccer practice and left his soccer shoes on and the cleats on his right shoe, got caught on the gas pedal. He took his eyes off the road, while reaching down to grab his shoe. The air bags on both cars deployed and that kept them both safe as they came out of the accident with bruises, aches and pains. I had several company cars and it wasn't until 2006 that we bought a new Civic 4 door, metallic red, automatic. My oldest daughter moved to AZ in 2007 and she later needed a car. I gave her the 2006 civic to use. This past Dec, 2016, she bought a new 2015 Cadillac, that was a left over model on the lot. She called my up and said; "Dad you gave me the civic to use and now that I bought my new Cadillac, I am going to give it back to you".
Last December, my wife and I owned a 2004 Pepper White, 5 speed manual trans Mini Cooper, which we bought new in 2004. I had a 2003 Nissan Sentra SER Spec V, 6 speed manual trans that was 'sunburst yellow', which I bought used, when I gave the 2006 Civic to my daughter. After getting up in years, my wife and I decided to get an automatic. After getting the 2006 Civic back from my daughter (which was an automatic), we decided to keep it and I just recently sold my 2003 yellow Nissan to my sister.
The only car that my wife and I have purchased, that is equal to the quality, fit and finish to the Civics, has been the 2004 Mini Cooper, which we will keep, along with the 2006 Civic; both of them for a long, long time.
I am a believer in the Honda Civics. They have never left me or my two daughters down. High quality and reliable automobiles!
Thanks for listening.
