Question Turbo life.

I'm looking at an 06 Si with 50K miles. My worry is that the car has already has a turbocharger on it and I read on "turbotechnics" that the life of a turbo is generally 75K if oil changes have been on time. From the list of mods it appears the owner covered all their bases and took good care of the car. Does anyone know if the "75" is correct, and if so when I hit that magic number should I replace everything? Is this a good idea?

When the turbo starts leaking oil (not necessarily visible... it usually leaks inside and gets burnt up, creating excessive smoke from the exhaust), get it rebuilt. Until then, don't even think twice about it.

OH, I didn't even realize that. I thought he said it already had one, not that he was worried it already had one.

Just take a picture of your engine bay and post it here, we'll tell you if you have one or not.

sorry, let me clarify - the car already has a turbo on it (GReddy specifically), the car has been driven 50k but kept in good condition. My concern is that if the turbo craps out at 75k I only have about a year and a half before I have to dump another 5,000 into replacing the turbo/associated parts.

You really shouldnt worry. and why in gods name would you have to spend 5k in replacing the turbo and the parts that go along with it? You turbo will most likely last longer then 75k. If it does go then just send it in for a rebuild, they are like $100 bucks i think.

There are a lot of shops you could find that specialize in rebuilding turbos. The rest of the equipment installed will likely last the life of the vehicle.

Basic rebuilds cost around $275-$300 around my area (from what I have seen). It'll cost more if anything inside is damaged(like a chipped fin etc etc).
