advice on turbocharging my B16a2
 

Hi,
I have read that you can run about 5-8 psi safely on the standard internals of the b16a2, however aftermarket bits are necessary thereafter. My engine has done about 130000 miles so id assume it would need a full rebuild prior to turbocharging (just what is required for this, and if necessary, i may aswell get uprated internals). It may be best to strengthen the internals for added security from the start, so what would i need; titanium valve springs? some turbo spec cams? and what else?. Can anyone subsequently recommend aturbo kit good for 5-10 psi as i can always get uprated turbo parts for 1BAR or more in the future.

You might not have to rebuild your engine. Just do a compression test first and if it turns out ok then you will be alright on low boost without rebuilding. Piecing together a kit would be cheaper than just buying a kit.

ok, but low boost wouldnt give much performance at the end of the day.Also wouldnt going for turbospec cams and pistons to reduce my compression ratio rob me of the engine's responsiveness and low end torque that makes it so easy to drive. Im not surea b16 turbo, even at low boostwould pass any UK emissions tests either, i may aswell just get the cheaper H22 or for a bit more a K20 swap. Then i can lift it in and out when the MOT comes along, no need to worry about disassembly or management changes. Going for a beefier VTEC engine would just enhance the feel of what makes VTEC so unique

You seriously need to drive American muscle or something, because B16s don't have torque down low, or up top.

no it has zero torque in a performance sense,but compared to other 1.6L engines and anything sub 2.0L it is very drivable. Your able to pull away in second gear and cruise along nicely at about 1500rpm which is dam difficult on anything sub 2.0L in the UK. Its lack of torque across the range is really strangling in a performance sense, but it has a nice amount low downas a daily driver, thats what i meant.

if you want to run any kind of decent boost to get any realistic power out of the car you will need to rebuild the BOTTOM end... that would include pistons, rings, rods, and some new rod and main bearings. a forged/knife-edged/lightened crank is nice but not necessary and are very expensive. i'm not posative but most heads can take up to about 15-18lbs on a stock head w/ a built block. but for anymore than that you would need a head rebuild. hope this helps.

compression test, leak down test.

after that
10-12 psi on a STOCK motor. use hondata and have fun. theres 10 boosted h's around me that are on stock motors with 10 psi.

dont be scared.
