garrett gt3076r

i picked up a garret gt30r off my buddy. it needs a rebuild and is usually very expensive to rebuild because its bb. is there much difference between a regular like cheap turbo and between the gt30r? is it worth the 500 to get it rebuilt?

I think BB turbo's are usually less prone to shaft play and spool up faster than other turbos of comparable sizes.

Well, how much did you buy the gt30 for? If it was less than $700, it's worth it to rebuild it; a Garrett GT3076r goes for $1200+ new, and after rebuilding it, you'll basically be looking at a new turbo internally.

I thought that BB turbos couldn't be rebuilt? I searched for about 30 seconds and found this:

There is no traditional rebuilding of the ballbearing center sections, they must be replaced with another one. You can swap shafts/turbines/housings though.

Don't get lured into buying a blown ball bearing turbo for cheap! Buying a new CHRA for it will cost you nearly as much as buying the whole turbo new in the first place!

well i picked up the turbo for 50 bucks cause it was my friend who sold it to me. it looks brand new but there is shaft play. bb turbos cannot be rebuilt you are right thats why they cost 500 dollars or more to do because the replace the CHAR or garrett will try to reuse the good stuff inside. so technically you can rebuild them but garrett has to do it because you cant buy rebuild kits for them.
