well depending on the turbo kit, you dont need to build your motor, as alot of them are made for stock applications on a lower boost, there is a good write-up in the search button there, just type turbo and find forty04 writeup on what u need to build a setup. Very good thread

i did a little bit of searching and reading and i think i figured it out, BUT i'm still probably wrong lol
ok so in order for my car to be tuned i need to get a chip for my ecu, i take that to the tuner,
they program it and put it in and do whatever else they have to do,
then when the the motor and turbo get put in the car i take it to the tuner and they tune it.
is this right or am i still stupid?
thanks for being so patient with me

they can't tune a stock ECU. so you will have to either have the ECU Chipped, get an aftermarket piggy back system such as Hondata, Chrome, Greddy Emanage, etc etc., or you could even tune with something as small as a SAFCII but the car MUST be tuned once you put the turbo kit on, otherwise you may end up blowing up ur engine and then you would have wasted all that time and money saving up for the turbo kit w/ no car to drive.
some weird info here....he is correct saying you can't tune the stock ECU, you can either have it chipped/tuned with a program like Crome, Netune, Uberdata, Hondata, ETC., get a standalone system like AEM EMS, or get a piggyback system like Apexi SAFC/VAFC or the GReddy Emanage, or the AEM Fuel/Ignition controller. All are ways of tuning, OBD1 tune would prolly be the best, standalone is next (only becasue of how expensive it is), and piggy-backs should be a last resort

i try to explain things in a simple to understand manner.

Silver - we all started some time or another so we understand you are new. basically it all depends on what kind of power you are trying to make. if you just want some extra pep, than piece together a cheap kit, get a VAFC controller, tune it to a safe A/F ratio (or have somebody else do it, whatever) and you'll be good.
most of the time people make this molehill and turn it into a mountain. it's all dependant on your goals. if you are wanting like a 600whp beast than i'd never recomend a simple SAFC/VAFC. it would definatly have to be a piggyback and acutally you may get ur money's worth by going stand alone.
IMO here's how i look at it.

- 350whp = SAFC/VAFC is fine
350 - 600whp = piggy back/chipped ecu
600+ = stand alone for sure!

350whp on the afc is really pushing it if it's on a d series engine. I would say at the most 220whp on the afc on a d16 engine.

Im looking for about 180hp(if possible) on my d15b7. I want use a low safe amount of boost, I think I will look into the hondata f200 + boost I think is what it is, not completely sure but I did see it on option jdm or something
