Default Stock DX-planning a turbo

98 civic dx 80k miles. Bone stock and i was talking with a local mechanic who works on civics. He said I could buy one of those turbo kits on ebay for like 500, run about 7 lbs of boost, put an exhuast, maybe manifold or a few other minor cheap mods and get about 80HP out of it. so lets say 110hp to about 200HP on my bone stock civic. He says it would still be reliable b/c im only running about 6 7 lbs of boost, and not really any other mods. What do you think.

I want my car to be a daily driver, reliable but im looking for that little extra power, nothing crazy though. WOuld i really notice the turbo running low boost and is it worth it for the grand i may put into my car? Let me knowthanks

You just want a blow off valve dont you?

Ebay turbo is an Ebay turbo..... Type in EBAY TURBO in the search bar.

ok you really need to search first off.

but thats besides the point...

1. ebay kits generally are garbage and tend to be missing out on necessary components.
2. lbs of boost means nothing. your engine can only take X amount of power. you will get different levels of power from different turbos running the same amount of boost
3. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH
4. its gonna be more than 1k
5. gains are completely worth it. doubling your hp for ~2k is a lot better than spending 1k and gaining 20hp from crap like CAI header exhaust

Josh pretty much nailed it.

Be wary of any companies using eBay as their only avenue for selling their products. It usually means their products are a little lacking in quality control and good R&D. On ebay turbos, the seals have a habit of leaking... your seals leak, the turbo runs dry, and you can kiss your turbo good-bye.

PSI means literally nothing. A Mitsubishi 14b turbo and a Garrett GT3076R can flow very different amounts of air. Imagine it like this. you have a foot-long straw and a foot-long section of 3' sewer pipe, both completely sealed. 10psi in the straw is going to be a lot less air than 10psi in the sewer pipe. That's why PSI doesn't mean anything as far as how much is safe to run on a stock engine.

A good reliable turbo setup will be in the $2k and up range. $2k would get you a moderately reliable bare-bones setup that would probably make most people happy.
