Supercharger or Turbo?
i doubt anyone had Quaife as a spelling word
but thats what i want. if i rebuild my b16 trans, then ill get a Quaife, but if i find a low mileage Type R trans, or if a friend comes through on a Spoon trans, ill just do that.

ps a full race stage 4 turbo kit (which is the same stuff they have on their 700hp civic) is only 5k.
but MD...i was just saying in an engineering aspect its not at all fair to put a JRSC up to a Full-Race turbo. but like you said...money is money.
according to that dyno of the RSX-S JRSC they made power to 9k...i didnt think superchargers would go that high? what pully is on there?
oh yeah...im willing to bet that the reason the RSX showed a bigger gain w/ the JRSC than the civic w/ the turbo (or one of them) is because the RSX also had an exhaust, header, and intake added.

Dunlop FM 901s. I need to go to a 16" wheel to get a little wider tires, that would help a lot, and around a corner its a lot worse, but even in a straight line, it burns them from 5700 on up in first and sometimes second. when i get an LSD it will be a lot better, esp for cornering.

Im loving this thread all the big gun's have come out to play!. Its so informative. Over here in the UK you could probably count the number of turbo/sc civic's on both hands. Its very rare and those that do know about it also know that it comes with a hefty price tag!
I just dont know where to go with mine at the moment, ive got the perfect platform for boost right now but it would be such a hassle taking it on the way things are over here, not to mention expensive as once id started down that road I wont stop.
Plus like Sac said I also dream of owning the ultimate N/A set up in the near future. (preferably a dc2 type-r bulit to a spoon spec on ITB's) Its going to cost big. Anyway back to the turbo, got a friend turbo'in his d16 del-sol soon so i guess i can see what happens there. hopefuly not to many broken gear boxes and clutchs.

well considering you have to run some pretty high octane and considering gas prices in the UK, im not suprised. thenagain...you need those high octane gasses for high CRs too...
a lot of stuff in the UK is all show no go. some of the riciest things in the worldcome out of england.

Id rather have the high octane thanks. 98 optimax all the way baby. Ans yes our petrol prices are ridiculous, but last time I was in the states it cost a lot more to fill up my sebring then the time before that (Oh what a car that is!)
I can deal with the petrol prices over here but its the cost of a turbo kit and other aftermarket parts that breaks the bank.
And yes we have some terribly ricey cars over here, but then last time I checked so do you. and as for all show and no go we have some of the worlds finest skylines, supra's etc with over 1000bhp all built here in the Uk.

wow, this thread had quite a turnout. Thanks for all the great input.
My summarization of the subject to the best of my understanding is this(tell me if im wrong)
If your looking for a fairly simple hp gain and dont plan on making your car a neverending project, go with the sc
If you are looking for something that has more potential but is going to require a substantial amount of work and mabe more money in the long run, go with the turbo
correct me if im wrong but that is just my understanding so far of what people are saying

I am as unbiased as it comes. I drive a SC'ed car and actually think turbos are a good idea.
Yes, you could probably piece together a turbo kit, or get a used one for around $1000, but the price of a JRSC kit and the price of a new GReddy turbo kit are comparable.
Greddy stock 5th gen kit- $2,055.00 (no intercooler, BOV, fuel management, or boost controller)
JRSC stock 5th gen kit- $1,995.00 (FMUincluded)
Ease of installation- advantage JRSC
Engine safety- JRSC (doesn't use engine oil, no chance for overboost)
Ability to upgrade- GReddy +1+1+1=+!=+!=1=!=111=+!+! (but we are talking about stock kits here)
What are we talking about here? Boost. 6psi = 6psi. You build a 6pound turbo car and I will build a 6pound SC car and I will hand you your buttocks at the AutoX, on the street, and at the strip. and then Sac will come whoop both of us NA.
ps- B16A swap- $ 1199

OK, so far, none of you have been unbiased, so you might as well leave that whole disclaimer out.
To answer your question, MccM, you've pretty much got it. Expandability vs. simplicity seems to be the big issue on everyone's minds here, so it's really up to you. If you want significantly more low end but don't really care about big gains, SC. If you want big gains that come a little higher up (but still give you a nice low end) and are willing to adapt to a more advanced driving style, Turbo.
In case you can't tell, I'm a turbo guy.
