Turbo Project

Well I got my teggie not too long ago and it still needs an exhaust and to be lowered but I will be doing those two mods very shortly. Afterwards I'm going to be turboing it (it's a 1998, B18b1). I've been reading up on turbos alot recently and am learning alot more than what I knew. I'm just hoping to get a solid plan down for my turbo so I can start piecing the parts together. Assuming I follow "Petes Turbo Grocery List" would it be a better route to take and buy good brands with a budget of about $2000 instead of buying a kit? Or would it be better if I bought a kit as it will be my first time boosting a car. This car will still be my DD, and I'm not looking to make huge HP (just somewhere around the 250WHP area). Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks in advance,

TiCkEr :)

RE: Turbo Project

I learned the hard way with my old '86 Fiero that I put a turbo on, whatever your budget, plan on at least doubling it before it's all said and done. It seemed like there was always something I needed or had to be done. Instead of turboing my stock V6, I should have swapped it for a bigger motor, like a Caddy V8, would have cost me sooooo much less than fooling with a turbo setup.

RE: Turbo Project

I wouldnt go as far as saying it'll cost you twice as much as your original budget, but you will run into a lot of miscellanious expenses. I dropped around $200 on just misc. fittings, clamps, hose tees, etc etc etc... When you are ready to start the install, make sure you have an extra $200-$300 on you, you'll need it

RE: Turbo Project

The thing about it is to not set a solid budget because you start to skimp on parts.

TicKeR_96_HaTcH 07-26-2006 03:41 PM

RE: Turbo Project

That's why I said $2000 rather than $1000. I don't have a set budget.. if you guys think it will be best for me to piece my kit together with better name brands for cheaper than buying a kit then ill do that. I'm just looking for a direction to be pointed in. I don't mind spending even $3000 if I have to, but at that price I can be buying a kit. Also what are some good tips to do to your engine before turboing? If this question has already been answered, just send me the link lol.. things like water pump, timing belt etc.

Thanks for the help so far guys, I appreciate it.

dollar for dollar, a self-pieced kit will put zip codes on a pre-assembled kit.

TicKeR_96_HaTcH 07-26-2006 04:32 PM

RE: Turbo Project

Alright, then a self pieced kit it is. I'm going to have to do lots of reading on how to piece a turbo kit together.. :(. If you guys want to throw suggestions my way, that would be great lol.

RE: Turbo Project

unless you get the edelbrock kit which is gonna cost you around 4k+ piecing it togather helps because most kits dont come with fuel managment and youll need it its where the real $ comes in

RE: Turbo Project

your goals are 250whp?

TicKeR_96_HaTcH 07-27-2006 03:42 AM

RE: Turbo Project

Yeah, somewhere around the 250whp+ range would be great as a DD.

TiCkEr

Forty04 07-27-2006 08:56 AM

RE: Turbo Project

Well, 250+ is really pushing it on stock internals, especially on a DD. I would suggest either sticking to around 200, or doing some internal work..

TicKeR_96_HaTcH 07-27-2006 01:26 PM

RE: Turbo Project

I heard the b18b1 can handle 300hp on stock internals, but I could be wrong. Even 200-230whp would be fine.

^ depends on how good of tune you have

TicKeR_96_HaTcH 07-27-2006 04:02 PM

RE: Turbo Project

Well I'll have to get a good tune then. :) As for piecing my own kit together, what brands would you guys recomend and what size of turbo, intercooler should I be looking at for my stock b18b1? I guess anything over 200HP would be great.. as long as I get a huge BOV that's loud lol (theres a little rice in all of us).

T03/04 turbos seem to very popular these dayz and can produce nice horsepower. u will notneed an expensive nor big intercooler for for 200-230 horsepower. when designing ur kit be sure to take in account fuel mangement (injectors, pump etc) or else ur car will run like s*** ( i learned that the hard way) good luck

BlackDragon 07-28-2006 01:00 AM

RE: Turbo Project

for an LS motor dont shoot for 250whp unless u wanna replace your motor(stock internals). Just get a mitsu t28(or similar) and run ~10 pounds and be happy. You can easily peice a turbo kit together for under 1000 if u know what to look for and where.

BlackDragon 07-28-2006 01:01 AM

RE: Turbo Project

stock fuel pump is fine. stock fuel lines/rail are FINE. Just get dsm 450's and a honda resistor box.

My bad dude, I must have missed that part when I read your message the first time, didnt realize you were working with a b18

RE: Turbo Project

No prob man. You can make it up to me by getting that turbo of urs in tip top shape and making some videos for us!! :D haha. I'm going to print out that whole page on beesandgoats and hopefully learn quite a bit. I've basically got the money to start piecing together my kit so the quicker I learn the quicker ill have my turbo! Talk about motivation.. I wish school could be more like this.

A 14B or a 16G will support you needs and can be had fairly cheap. I got a buddy with a EVO 16G with under 1000 miles on it forsale for $300

TicKeR_96_HaTcH 07-28-2006 06:53 PM

RE: Turbo Project

Is a 14B or 16G turbo basically just as simple to install as a t3/t4 turbo? The only difference would be getting the matching mitsu manifold?

RE: Turbo Project

I might have found my turbo. Let me know what you guys think. It is used but under 500 miles.

-Garrett t3/t04 (.63/.48) Stage 2 turbine wheel
-Inline Pro Cast Iron Manifold
-Tial Sport 38mm Wastegate
-Greddy Type S BOV
-2.5-3" downpipe
-Rev Hard polished intercooler piping
-Drag III Intercooler

all tuned with uberdata at around 8 psi

-Autometer Boost Gauge
-Autometer Oil Pressure Gauge (needs new sending unit)
-Greddy Turbo Timer

He is asking $1600 obo, what do you guys think? And what should I offer?

sounds like your gonna have a sweet ass set-up. all this turbo talk makes me wanna boost the D... but as for above it seems like a good deal but my knowledge of FI is limited

TicKeR_96_HaTcH 08-04-2006 05:30 PM

RE: Turbo Project

Yeah, it seems to be a good deal. I just offered him $1300 shipped, we'll see what happens from here.

EDIT: He said $1300 + shipping, just waiting on an estimate for shipping cost.. oh my the suspense is rising. lol

RE: Turbo Project

does the turbo have shaft play? was everything new 500 miles ago or did he get some stuff used? make sure the welds on the manifold are all good, but other than that it sounds like a pretty good deal. how big is the intercooler? but when you put it on your car you will have to get it retuned.

Pete 08-06-2006 12:03 PM

RE: Turbo Project

Seems to be a good kit.....all solid name parts. Thats a really good manifold too because the wastegate is in the middle, not off to the sides. Is he giving u the ECU with the uberdata? youd wanna get that re tuned if so, because even if its the same engine the tune will be different. Thats a good kit for 1300 if you get it, but I would wanna know why he is selling it. Make sure you fondle the turbo wheel when u get it, and PAY THRU PAYPAL. This way if u get it and the something is wrong, you ass is covered.

RE: Turbo Project

^^ thanks for all the advice guys. I'll look into it. And I do plan on paying through paypal if the deal goes through. I'm waiting to hear a response from him.

*cough* ghey * cough*... just kidding bro.. looks like a good deal... then u might be able to keep up

RE: Turbo Project

I think we worked out a deal for $1400 shipped. I will not be receiving the ECU but he said he will give me the chip with chrome that is tuned which doesn't really matter because ill have to re tune the car anyways.

He told me:

"All you would have to do is buy a chipping kit (15 bucks) chip your ecu and put my already tuned chip in. If you can soder its not hard but if you know a local shop that has done it before that is safer."

I don't really know if that's a good idea though, might be alright until I get it retuned but hopefully we can rap this deal up soon.

RE: Turbo Project

We've got everything pretty much worked out but I haven't heard from him in a couple days but I came across this setup which I could get for around $1000 -$1200. What do you guys think?

Garrett T04E 57 Trim
Spooling PErformance Mani
Spoolin 2.5" DP Flanged to 3"
TunerToys Oil Line Kit
Braized Oil Pan
Greddy Type-S BOV
Blox 12:1 FMU
AutoMeter Cobalt Boost Gauge
FAST-TURBO Vacuum Mani
Tial 38mm Wastegate w/7psi spring
Mishimoto Intercooler
Turbo XS Silicone Couplers
Spoolin Perf Downpipe
All vacuum Lines
All piping included
Synapse Missing Link

100 Miles on the whole Setup. He is in college and after putting it on I guess he decided he won't be able to afford it and the tune so he's selling it. Heres a pic, it looks pretty new to me. Good names too: Greddy, Tial, Spoolin Performance, Garrett.

It would probably be best to bring your ecu to a shop because that way they'll be liable for anything they do wrong.

RE: Turbo Project

Hey guys, can anyone tell me which would be the better turbo setup to go with? Their both around the same price and both fairly new. I have a b18b1 and I am shooting for roughly the 250hp range. Quick responses please because I have to pay one of the guys!
