Default turbo vs. supercharger

Now I know when you saw the title of this thread you were wanting to shoot me. But its not what you think. I know the pro's and con's of each, and I have read about a million turbo vs. supercharger threads. I am debating on whether to put a supercharger or turbo on my 93 ex. So here is the question: lets say someone has a 93 ex with a basic turbo setup and I have a 93 ex with a supercharger. Would I get smoked by the turbo or would they be pretty evenly matched? Im leaning toward a supercharger at the moment simply because its simple and I can get one cheaper than a turbo.

It seems to me like a turbo is better suited for a street application, because it can manage heat better (intercooler, etc.). Gas mileage is also increased with a turbo (driven properly), and decreased with a supercharger. But as far as pure power output. It seems to me, just by having looked at dyno graphs, turbos create a better peak torque, and then begin to fall off, while superchargers hold a FLAT torque curve. I've never transposed one on to the other though to see the difference.

JRSC @ 6psi
Stock D16Y8
I/H/E

T3T04e 57trim @ 7psi
Stock D16Y8
Open DP, restrictive intake, street tuned

Answer your question? Both of the dyno's are of MY personal car.

I agree to Kedawei, just adding that superchargers have better lower end, and do not have lag. You can use intercooler with supercharger, too, btw.

The problem as I see it is the current supply on the market. You can find a street legal turbo for probably any boost your engine can handle, but when you turn to superchargers, the supply is scarce, to say the least. I was able to find only Jackson Racing, and their street legal version is, hmmm, mediocre… And installation is far from plug and play, too. I think you should go with turbo if your goal is maximum performance.

I like turbos better. Say youre stock, boosting 8lbs......Then you build the motor up......You can run 15+ lbs on the same turbo. Whereas the SC needs a different pully, if it cant even get up to 15psi. Superchargers are definetly nice for daily drivers thou

Good comparison SovXiet.

The only way I know to intercool the JRSC is by use of this http://www.lhtperformance.net/Superc.../upgrades.html
Also, Vortech makes a centrifugal charger system for Integras. It might mount into Civics, dunno though. It features what they call an "aftercooler." But having seen a picture of it, it seems like it would be more accurately called an intercooler. But anyway.

Even though the original poster has made up his mind it seems, I've done some digging and thought a a few more things should be noted. To make good power from the JRSC, takes some craftsmanship. Custom modification and fabricating has to be done. The vortech on the other hand, if even applicable, should be easier to work with. Though as Pete mentioned, boost is not adjustable regardless without building/purchasing a new pulley. Also, a big difference not mentioned so far is cost. These supercharger systems cost significantly more than even a well built turbo system.

From a performance perspective, the only useful application I can see for a supercharger (in Civics) would be for trying to create a lower output, consistent, predictable powerband for road racing. The cost of such a setup might be comparable to just having stayed naturally aspirated, though.

Well the reason I was even considering a JRCS is because I could get one for cheaper than a turbo. A guy I know has a d16z6 motor with a JRSC already installed for only $1000. I have seen JRSC's new for $2000, and about $800-$1500 on ebay. So its a pretty good deal for a spare motor and a supercharger. But I think a turbo would suite my needs better than a supercharger.

Well, I might be weary of such a low price anyway. The advantage of doing something yourself is ensuring it's done right. You can't really know what condition that guy's setup is in.
