These are nothing much to look at, just playing with aperture priority and depth of field. Practicing this so I can do them "AT WILL". This photography thing is fun...
Pole in focus, swings out of focus...

Swing in focus, surroundings out of focus...

Foreground out of focus, background in focus...

Merry-go-round pole (far left) in focus surroundings out of focus...

Self-explanatory...

Well, it's a Fujifilm S5100 10X zoom with full manual controls. You can use it as a point and shoot camera but it has a lot more in-depth features that I'm just now taking the time to learn. Just about every digitial camera has the ability to duplicate the effects I've done here (aperture, DOF) it's just that some have greater ranges and different strength/quality lenses.

Those are very cool pics jake. I had to do something like that for my photography class last year and i had no idea how to. I just spun around on one of those merry go rounds and took a picture of the middle of it so everything else was blurry.

Civicexracer, yeah you can do it the way you described which is to focus on one object, then position the photo to your liking. On my camera you can also choose "area" focus in AF mode where you can move the focus point with the directional button anywhere on the screen. Either way you get the same results. The greater your zoom, along with a high aperture setting (which is actually a lower number)... the more extreme the aperture effect can be. Pretty cool learning all this...
