17's...how wide on tire?

so i want to buy these 17 by 7 wheels and wanted to know if a 225/40 would be too wide for the wheel. i want that tire because after doing some math i found out that with these tires i am not even a centimeter over my original overall height. So my speedo won't change at all.

I have a 98 civic and I had 205/40/R17....get that its a good size. Actually now that I look you were asking about if it would work for that wheel size, I'm not sure man sorry about that.

yeah for 7 inches wide id say 205 width. get a 205/45/17 and you should be set.

Do you have pics of your 98? I have a 97 Civic EX Sedan? Did the 17s affect your ride quality? Did you have your car lowered? I have the original wheels and was thinking about upgrading. I'm not sure what size to get.

Here are some pics when I had my 17's. I didn't have my car lowered, but I'd highly recommend that you do because it looks so much better. My car sat pretty high. As for the ride quality, my wheels were pretty heavy so they might have slowed me down but going from 17's to 15's I dont know whether the weight difference affecting the ride quality is noticable or if it's just in my head. Other than that the ride was just fine. Honestly I'd go for 15's or 16's if I were you.

205/40/17's won't throw your speedo off enough to notice, plus if you got the 225's there is a good chance your wheels would stick out slightly and might rub also. I would personally buy 16's as I think they look the best in a civics wheel well (especially if it is dropped a bit) and it wont hurt your ride as much as 17's with 40 series tires would.

225's would rub for sure. i have 205/40 r17 and barley any room in there. thts just turning the wheel but i got an easy 2 inch drop tht im gona do and itll work out fine.

EDIT: i have a 98 ex coupe

If your stock size is 185/65/14, it's 23.5 in tall
the 225/40/17 is 24.1 you see, thats almost an inch! your speedo WILL change my friend
go here: no math needed http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html
