1989 Honda Civic mushy brake pedal during traffic... Then went back to normal..

1989 Honda Civic mushy brake pedal during traffic... Then went back to normal..
New here..
Why would it go mushy for my 2 hours stuck in traffic... Then back back to pressurized?
It was about 85 degrees and the car was baking in the heat.. Brake fluid is at normal level.
Was it how I was driving? It is a 5sp. I was between neutral and 1st gear for about 2hrs.
