Default ABS help for a newbie

Hi all,

Feel like chucking the car in the bin. Getting all sorts of crazy quotes to check out the ABS system on the car. 96 Civic ESi.

I've searched the forum for previous answers but can't find any. My ABS light stays on all the time, does someone know of a quick reset for the ABS system incase it has frozen up, or a couple of steps for a hint on what i can try to get it fixed. The price of the fix is almost as much as the car is worth.

Thanks in advance,

yep ABS is dam expensive to look at or fix, i thought i had a abs problem before and the quots to look at it were very high (dident have a problem tho), you could try dissconecting the battery and hook it back up to see if it resets it...im not sure a way to try and fix it yourself tho

done a diagnostic check and its a speed sensor(???) at the back left of the car, whatever that is.

Any ideas on how to replace sensor.

Probably one of the sensors that detects wheel speed so the abs knows how much braking to apply, etc. Buy new sensor. Take the old one out. Put the new one in. That's really the extent of my knowledge when it comes to ABS, except I do know that the ABS unit alone is about the size of the ECU .

You wanna make sure that it is actually the wheel sensor that is broken. It could also be that the wheel on the hub is broken some how (broken teeth). What is exactly the problem? I have a basic understanding of how the ABS system works and i can always ask my auto teacher who has been working on cars for a really long time (like 40+ years, since he was 17).

thanks again,

Okies here goes. Start the car up and the ABS light comes on for about 2-3 secs then goes out, I think this is the comp running a self check. When you start to drive it then comes back on and stays on until the ignition is turned off. I tried the brakes on some gravel and it runs into a skid, ie NO ABS on any wheel. I ran the self diagnostic check, (bridging the test plug) and it Flashed 4 times then 8 times and according to the manual that is a fault in the sensor at the rear left, but granted, it does not say if the fault is with the sensor or the gear cog.

I'm gonna try and strip it down and clean the cog and magnet up and see if that works. But from talking to a couple of folks here, it looks like it might be the sensor that is gubbed. but any more information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,, led
