brake pedal goes to floor

i have a 2003 civic ex. when i'm at a stop light the brake pedal goes to the floor. just got the car back from the shop and they say it's some kind of saftey feature to releave the pressur to ensure this brakes don't lock up. is this true?

describe better...does it come back up? Or did it just plain drop? Is the car able to stop? Did it make a buzzing noize? Do you have ABS?

Are you holding it down and it gradually sinks?

If so, then you have air in the brake lines which needs to be bled out. Take it back to the shop that did the work.

If it didn't do this before the shop had it then something is wrong.

If you can sit at a stop with your foot on the brake, and it gradually falls to the floor, then the master cylinder is probably f'ed

If it goes all the way to the floor, something is wrong.

I'm gonna agree with every1 else that if it didn't do it before and it does it now then take it back to the shop and demand they fix it. If the pedal drops while you have your foot on it, then chances are that one of the seals inside the M.C. is leaking causing the pedal to drop. Pretty much your M.C. is bad.

Bottom line: it didn't do it before it was in the shop so TAKE IT BACK.

Common sense...

My husband replaced the pads, rotors and the calipers on the front. The car is still not braking. They have been bled and the back brakes are fine. Any reason why the brakes are still not working?
