brakes 98 civic Q
Hello,
I've got a chilton manual for my 98 civic LX. I understand how to change pads, but nowhere does it state what tools are needed, or if it does it's very vague: wrenches and clamp and siphon. Could someone tell me what size wrenches, how many, C-clamp size to fit on pistons, or whatever else is needed to change my brake pads on the front?? thanks |
RE: brakes 98 civic Q
All you need is wrench with 12mm socket(could be wrong), C-clams and a hammer(optional but usefull)

RE: brakes 98 civic Q
Yeah, the hammer is definately my #1 tool

All you REALLY need is a metric socket set, a ratchet, and a big screwdriver. Before you take the calipers off, stick the screwdriver in the back of the caliper and pry against the pads to push the pistons back into the calipers. This makes it 100 times easier to install the new pads. Also, if you're using a hammer on your brakes...? You may want to re-think your priorities.

Thanks for answering. So it is not necessary to siphon off brake fliud before pushing in pistons, and a screwdriver can be used to pry brakes apart, therefore, pushing in pistons instead of using a C-clamp?
thanks |
RE: brakes 98 civic Q
right. i have a c-clamp i use just for brakes though. i like having one around in case i dont get the piston all the way into the caliper with the screwdriver. and since you are just coming over to hondas, ill give you a rundown of the tools you'll need the most on a honda.
8mm 10mm 12mm 14mm 17mm 19mm 32mm (for most hubnuts) tie-rod seperator (AKA, Pickle fork.) .25" pin (non-tapered) punch (for the bitch pin in hte shift linkage that connects the linkage to the tranny. anyone who has fought these knows what im talking about.) torque wrenchs 1/2" breaker bar. extension handle for above. i use a jack handle. philips screwdrivers (mostly #2) thats what i use the most. make sure you have these and a few other basic tools. those sizes are the most used ones on hondas though. oh yeah, and a couple kinds and sizes of hammers.;) |
