rear brake question for 2001 civic

I have to do the rear brakes on my wifes 2001 civic. What do I got to do to get the drum off? I tried pulling on it once before and could`nt get it. I see there is a threaded hole and I figured it was to screw a bolt into to "pull" the drum off but I don`t know what size it is or if that is even what it`s for. Also, is there any special tools needed? I`ve done a ton of brakes on my old chevys but never messed with these cars before. Are the rears self adjusting? Is there a procedure? If anyone has a pic of the complete assembly that would be great too. I tried looking through some old posts but could`nt find what I needed. Thanks.

I too got free education high school autoshop. If the drum won't come off, get a hammer (ball-pine works best) and hit the drum on the very croner (its the strongest part). Turn the drum and hit it everywhere. That should loosen it enough to get the drum off. However, it isn't a bad idea to take the car to a shop and have them tell you what needs to be replaced. Saves you a lot of time in lifting the car up, taking off tires, etc. However, i would watch those guys b/c i have heard of them breaking stuff so they can replace it. Just walk out, don't buy anything. Brakes (especially discs) are so easy that there isn't a reason to pay any1 to do it. Drums are a little tricky and i personally hate them.

I'm sure you're doing the brakes this weekend....all I have is a shot from 98-00 year civic....I'm sure it's very close to what you'll find.
To get them off release the parking brake (LOL duh) and pull em. I know..it always sounds easy.
Yes the rears are self adjusting, as well as an adjusting star wheel inside (could get at it from the back side though)
Do a search as I know we covered this subject not to long ago....

MAKE SURE the e-brake si down when you're pulling the drum off...my dumb-you-know-what tried to take them off for three hours straight just to find out that my parking brake was pulled up.

Been a long time since I did my drums. I remember it being fairly easy, just a pull apart put back together kind of thing. Polything's suggestion may help you or a Haynes manual to give you more confidence into the job. Good luck.
