Default strut install instructions??

I can't seem to find the post where someone stated they had detailed instructions on how to install front struts.

I have a 2001 civic, and the time has come to replace them, and the $700+ estimate from the dealer was outrageous. so we're going to attempt it ourselves.

i recall reading there was a compression tool that auto zone would lend that is needed.

could someone please point me to the poster of the install instructions, so I can PM him to send them to me? I don't believe he posted the instructions in the thread I found, but offered to send them to anyone who requested via PM.

Thanks!!

the strut compressor is about $100 to rent, you keep it for as long as a month, return it, get all your money back

just google/search strut install 7th gen civic

For $100 to rent, it better be one of these beauties:

And for the record, those are no safer than these, which cost around $30 to buy:

I've seen springs fly out of the first style spring compressor. Yeah, they're easier to use, but bulkier and the setup is very important for safety.

*edit: personally, I like using these, but i doubt advanced auto/autozone has them to rent out:

here is a nice DIY writeup http://gametrax.net/springs/index.html except i dont think he used a spring compressor. use a spring compreesor to compress the springs so you can remove the top hat/ nut. i rented mines at kragen for $50. and got my $50 when i returned it

to be honest...if you just put your foot on the top hat, you dont even need a compressor...waste of time. there is a good write up for our gen on another forum, just google it.

Ditto, you don't need compressors. I've done it twice without them.

You can use a jack under the control arm (while the car is on jackstands and the wheel is off) to jack up the shock, thus compressing it. Then you can undo the nut at the top of the shock piston. Then let the jack down and the shock and spring can now be separated.
