Shifter seems extra loose and sloppy, whats the fix?? All stock as of now. Also that long extra rod from the shifter up to the tranny is loose. What kind of stabaliser is it and what does it do??Thanks Toby

 

get a shifter bushing kit and will take 90% of the slop out of it. they feel really good to

 

After dealing with this problem in almost any used Civic I have ever owned. I found these solutions to the loose sloppy slutty shifter problem.

1. All new Bushing Kit - 25% of the time fixed the loose sloppy shifter
2. OEM New Shifter Assembly - always fixes the problem = expensive
3. Aftermarket Short Shifter = always fixes the problem = less expensive - cooler?

This is usually due to the following being rotted out, which you can replace at http://www.hondapartsdeals.com/

Your Items may have different numbers depending on the make and model, but basically it is the rubber spacer and washers and o-rings in the shifter.

#04 - WASHER, THRUST
#05 - COLLAR, RR. JOINT
#12 - BUSH, RR. JOINT
#24 - O-RING (11X1.9) (NOK)12
This is not the same as putting in a bushing kit, you buy these items sperate.... however all of this comes with and is replaced if you do the OEM Shifter or Aftermarket Short Shifter.

Is the bushing kit hard to install? It looks like the parts are all cheap enough but can someone with an average mechanical ability install this himself or do I need to pay a mechanic to do it? Thanks!

 

Your shifter itself is fine.

Oem shifter bushings are rubber and wear out over time. Buy an Energy Suspension polyurethane bushing kit for it, cost me like $15 for my kit. It is a matter of taking a few bolts out, anyone can do it. It'll tighten it up amazingly, makes it feel like new.

 

yeha that's no good. i'd get the aftermarket shifter so it's cooler and cost less
