bad bearings?
hi everyone
ive got an issue with my 96 civic EX
whenever im in first or second gear, my car makes a moaning noise. my dads friend is a mechanic, and he said that its probably just bad bearings in the transmission. he said to replace it if the noise bothered me.
so, i have dealt with it for a few months.
however, over the past couple weeks, it has been hard to shift it into reverse. ill put it in gear, but its not all the way in. i try putting more pressure on it but i dont want to cause any damage. i soon found out that if i shift through all my gears a couple times i can put it into reverse with no problem.
should i replace my transmission? or is something else the problem?
& about how much will the parts cost me?
Thanks in advance
Jon

the reverse thing is nothing to worry about really...most manuals have that...as far as the bearings go....it's much cheaper to replace them than get a used tranny put in...I would go that route if you can replace them yourself...in my S40 me and my mech did that job overnight.
I just posted a Transmission Bearing replacement, you can actually replace it yourself once you have the tranny off.. parts cost me $30.. just for the main housing bearing and a new seal. Can be done within a day..!
i too am facing a noise problem in my 97ex, and i'm considering a bearing replacement.. i feel very sure that its the input shaft bearing cause i hear it when i'm off the clutch, and it winds down and stops when i push the clutch in(sitting still in neutral) besides, as far as i know this is the original factory clutch, and the odo is showing 195k miles, so i figure i might as well put in a better clutch while im at it.. doing the job itself dosent scare me, i have a nice shop, and another vehicle to drive while i have this one torn down....
my question is this.. is there a better option, changing out the tranny for performance reasons... sequential? better design?
